Each of Them

You begin, but cannot take a breath
For want of knowledge.

The need for depth and fullness
Flickers into being and hunger bites
For want of satisfaction.

Now breath intensifies the pulse,
And images, unrecognised, bring fear.

A warmth draws near and flesh, familiar, soft
Embraces and restrains. The world
Slips slowly into place and hunger fades.

You are small yet universal in your reach
Immense in power to arouse, inspire and love.

You consume me and I am happy to be thus,
My diminution also my enrichment, my enlargement;
The fulfilment of my destiny, obeisance to this corporeal state.
